On February 13th, a 22-year-old female climate change activist, Disha Ravi, was charged and arrested for her efforts in supporting the agricultural reform of India. Her work, which consisted of sharing a document titled “Toolkit” that would potentially support the sedulous farmers, was identified as a “crime” that was equivalent to being placed on trial. Rumors have been spread about Ms. Ravi’s contribution to the document regarding how she had shared the “Toolkit” with the famous Swedish youth environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, who had presumably tweeted the work online. The young Swedish climate activists’ tweet had brought some global attention to the dreadful farming situations in India.
And Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s response to this type of global awareness-- was not pretty.
Ms. Ravi was immediately placed in custody; her offenses being officially titled as “sedition” and “conspiracy”; of creating “disaffection against the Indian state”. Though the young female has denied all of her charges, the magistrate and the Government of India have both pronounced that she will be kept under the authority of the constabulary until she has been proven as free of charge.
So where exactly is this issue of commotion coming from?
Recently, the Indian government has established and presented a set of new agricultural laws, those of which were created to benefit only the big businesses. Due to the unconstitutional approach of the BJP, for a duration of three months, tens of thousands of Indian farmers have publicly protested against the legislation set by the government. Not only do these newly set laws damage the economical balance of the working class citizens, but also it prevalently damages the well-being of the environmental well-being of India, which could potentially affect the climate and weather patterns of the nation.
In hopes of restoring the political, social, environmental, and economical welfare of the country, the environmental campaigners have advocated for the abrogation of such unequal and arbitrary laws. Although there has not been a positive response nor feedback coming from the BJP, many conscientious farmers have been utilizing peaceful methods to endeavor towards their objective.
However, this unjust occurrence and abuse of power from the governing body had caused the Indian environmental activist communities to begin to warn each other of the fatalistic consequences that may arise from their candid participation in the movement. Despite having these drawbacks, even now, an uncountable number of individuals, including the irreproachable figure, Dashi Ravi, are working to achieve their central goal of restoring agricultural harmony consonance in the Indian business.
