Looking at the clock, people rush out of their houses on a busy Monday morning. They hop into their cars and start the engine. People squeeze into traffic, sipping on their coffee with shaky hands. Speeding past the rows of cars, they barely reach their workplace on time. Transportation, so commonly used, is an easy way for people to move places efficiently in a short amount of time. However, the drawbacks of speeding through traffic are often overlooked.
The everyday automobiles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles, come close to a number of 17 million, and humans are using pose as the main source of gas emissions. Gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide, are threatening to the environment because they trap heat inside of the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to an increase in the degree of global warming. While maintaining the efficiency of transportation, the minimization of gas emissions from our common-day vehicles is needed in order to conserve our already damaged environment.
US President Biden has set a goal of bringing the nation’s emissions down to net zero by 2050, leaving exactly 29 years to make a change. Global warming is one of the highlights of the environmental issues revolving our Earth today and has caused detrimental effects to our environment, ranging from the Arctic animals losing their habitats to fire spreads in California forests. To think that simply traveling on an everyday vehicle contributes to one of the world’s issues is astonishing, yet it is the reality. If our transportation methods are changed to one that is more clean and conservative--for instance, electric cars--there would be less gas emissions and pollution from the movement of cars. Less gas emissions would result in less fossil fuels and heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere, leading us to take a step closer in minimizing the effects of global warming.
Referring to President Biden’s goal regarding global warming, New York Times states that if vehicle companies replace their normal gas-using automobiles with vehicles that run by electricity by around 2035, a decrease of gas emissions to a net zero by 2050 would be obtainable. A good start would be to use electricity-run vehicles while moving from place to place. Obtaining such a goal isn’t elementary, and it requires a bond of motivated people worldwide to see an apparent change to our environment. However, once people start to make small but impactful changes such as their choice in transportation, a healthier and cleaner environment is within our grasp.
